This May we’re hosting another Osprey Project Fundraiser Cruise to raise money for our Osprey Project development campaign. The trip has again been kindly sponsored by Osprey Europe, meaning 100% of money raised on the day and through ticket sales goes straight to our appeal, funding project developments including an exciting live-stream nest camera! To add to the excitement, we'll be joined on the boat by a team from the Osprey Leadership Foundation, including Osprey expert Tim Mackrill, who will have just completed a mammoth two-day 200 mile sponsored cycle from Rutland Water to raise money for the charity. OLF works with young people in different countries on the Osprey's migratory flyway to inspire and enable them to be the conservation leaders of the future. This includes projects in The Gambia, where one of our Poole Harbour juveniles, 019, was recently seen.
Last year saw one of our 2017 Osprey chicks (LS7) arrive back into the UK for the first time and quickly pair up with ringed female (CJ7). They spent the summer pair bonding and nest building on several of the artificial nest platforms that are located around the harbour. On three of the nests we placed motion sensitive SMS cameras meaning we got a great insight into their behaviour, but were only able to view still images from the cameras. Well, the next step is to get a live HD webcam stream set up on one of their favoured nests in the hope we’ll be able to provide a live stream for people to enjoy over the coming years. This is a long-term project and it could take a couple of years for successful nesting to take place, but with LS7 and CJ7 so active in 2019, we hope they both return safely in the spring of 2020, meaning we could see the first nesting attempt take place in southern Britain.

Ospreys begin to arrive back in the UK for their breeding season in mid-March and often spend time in Poole Harbour on their migration. This means we have a chance of seeing Ospreys on this fundraiser cruise, as well as the other harbour species. We will depart from the quay at 9:00am and return around 11:30am. While on the cruise, we will draw the winners of our fundraising raffle, of which boat ticket-holders can receive one free ticket per person (should you wish to enter!). Additional tickets will be able to be purchased in the HQ on the Quay. It promises to be a great morning at a very exciting time for the Poole Harbour Osprey Project, so please join us to raise money for this great project, while enjoying the views of the harbour.
