Sunnyside Farm Car Park, Ridge, Dorset, United KingdomView map

Sunnyside is a small wetland site owned and managed by Natural England. Over the last 10 years the site had become choked up with Juncus, and so back in 2017 Birds of Poole Harbour funded the essential habitat creation work to re-establish this small but valuable water body. The ‘Sunnyside Scrape’ has since hosted passage waders including Common, Green and Wood Sandpipers, Ringed and Little Ringed Plovers, as well as White Stork. The new scrape also attracts in passage passerines such as Wheatear, Whinchat and Yellow Wagtail, along with the odd bird of prey, namely Hobby, Merlin and Marsh Harrier. Then, in winter the site acts as an important feeding site for Common Snipe, Jack Snipe, Woodcock and Lapwing.

In partnership with Natural England and Stour Ringing Group, Birds of Poole Harbour are offering the opportunity to get an up close and personal experience to potentially see species such as Jack Snipe, Common Snipe and Woodcock in the hand. These hardy winter visitors are mostly nocturnal feeders so can often be impossible to see up close. However, with new and improved monitoring techniques, the number of these three species being ringed has increased, allowing us to deliver ringing demonstrations, talking through our work, the ringing process and provide information on the BTO ringing scheme.
