Bearded Tit Ringing Demonstrations

It's been a few years since we last ran our highly-popular Bearded Tit Ringing Demos, so we're delighted to announce their return to Lytchett Bay in partnership with Stour Ringing Group.

Rocking a striking appearance and illusive nature, Bearded Tits delight every birder. However, their strategy of breeding deep in the heart of the reedbeds can make them a difficult species to connect with in the field. With thanks to Dorset Wildlife Trust and Amphibian & Reptile Conservation Trust for permitting access to run these events, guests will have the opportunity to experience a unique insight into the bird ringing scheme and monitoring of this elusive reedbed-specialist, as well as a chance to familiarise yourself with a whole suite of other autumn migrants, offering the perfect opportunity to go through their key ID features up close and explain how to quickly recognise each species in the field.

Led by BTO qualified ringers, discover why the ringing scheme is so important and how it contributes to our understanding of key concepts such as migration, population change and survival rates. The events will showcase birds up close in the hand, demonstrating the how birds are examined and provide a deep dive into understanding moult strategies, species ageing and identification.

• Please arrive at the ringing table on Lytchett Heath 10 minutes before the event start time, to ensure a prompt start to the session.
• The event will take place outdoors, please dress accordingly for the weather conditions. Walking shoes/boots advisable.
• This event is weather dependent, bird welfare being paramount.
• Note, there are no toilet facilities or seating on site. You are welcome to bring a camping chair (optional).
• Accessibility: Entrance onto reserve via kissing gate which accommodates medium-mobility users (such as those with smaller walking aids).
• Access onto Lytchett Heath Nature Reserve via kissing gate along Sandy Lane, Upton (just west of Otter Close). Meeting place 300m along open sandy footpath.
