Lowland Heath Bird ID Course

Once considered a waste land of little value, lowland heathland is now appreciated and protected for its unique wildlife and austere beauty. Morden Bog is one of the largest valley mire habitats in England, with an extensive mosaic of dry and wet heathland fringed by coniferous and deciduous woodland. Spring and early summer is a spectacular time to visit as Dartford Warblers and Stonechats actively display, flitting among the heather and gorse. There's a chance Hobby and Cuckoo, recent arrivals back from Central Africa, may dash around the heath while we try to track down singing Tree Pipit and Woodlark, rare heathland specialists. Then turning to the woodland, we'll go in search of Crossbill, Siskin, Spotted Flycatcher and Common Redstart which all breed in the area, all accompanied by the delightful 'cronking' calls and acrobatic displays of local breeding Raven overhead.

These courses aim to unpack bird sounds and identification, separating those tricky confusion species like Meadow and Tree Pipit, by combining vocalisations with field skills and breaking down of diagnostic plumage characteristics. Our 3.5-hr course will equip you with all the information and skills you'll need to head out this spring and approach bird ID with a newfound confidence and enthusiasm!

Additional Information

• Group sizes are limited to 12 people.
• Binoculars are available to any participants if required.
• Meeting place: Sherford Bridge car park along the B3075 Morden Road
• You do not need to print your ticket, we will simply use a digital guest list for checking in.
• Accessibility and distance: Gentle walk (approx. 5km) across uneven terrain. Please note, unfortunately there is no wheelchair access across the site.
• No public toilets available on the reserve.
• Please wear sturdy footwear and suitable clothing according to the conditions.
