Young Birders Nightjar Walk
- Tuesday 3 June 2025
- 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
- Slepe Heath, Dorset, United Kingdom
Poole Harbour is a stronghold for Nightjars, and Slepe Heath is no exception! We're heading out as a Young Birders Club to try and find these incredible birds at Slepe Heath which is nestled to the north of Hartland Moor and Corfe Castle. Join us to discover the mysterious lifestyles and experience their haunting song ring out across the heathland at dusk.
We'll have time to explore the heath during the golden hour, searching for other heathland specialists like Dartford Warbler, Stonechat, Cuckoo and Hobby while taking in spectacular views of the western reaches of the harbour. As the light fades, the grand finale will be listening to (and hopefully watching!) Nightjars as they become active at dusk, before they head out in to the darkness to forage.

Travel
We will meet at the Slepe Heath Access Gate along soldiers road (what3words address: songs.habit.grab) to start the walk at 8pm sharp. We will be providing minibus transport to the site if there is interest, as the site is not easily accessible by public transport. This will be departing from Wareham Station car park at 7:40pm and leaving Slepe Heath at approximately 10:15pm. This has a limited number of spaces so please ensure you purchase the appropriate ticket. 2 Birds of Poole Harbour staff/volunteers will be present on the minibus to ensure safeguarding. If under 16 you will need consent from your parent or guardian to go on the minibus and attend the event. Please get in touch with us if you have any questions about this as we want to make these events as accessible as possible.
